Abstract

Resource constrained project scheduling problem (RCPSP) is a difficult problem. It has been studied by many researchers to be solved both numerically and using heuristics, and recently by meta-heuristics. In this article, these studies are discussed briefly. But more importantly the investigation of practical solution techniques is analyzed. One commercial and one open-source project management software are compared in regard to their performances of resource leveling tools to handle well known problem data set. This comparison shows that neither of them dominates the other and RCPSP keeps its place as a complex problem not only in the theoretical domain but also in the practical application field.
